THE FUTURE OF TIME WITH DR JAMES BEACHAM

Launching July 16, 2020

What a mind-bender – the future of time.  What is time? Mike connected with Dr James Beacham to find out.

Particle physicist, CERN investigator, and popular futurist, Dr James Beacham is a researcher on the Atlas Experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in Switzerland.

Originally from the midwest USA, James believes that every curious human is secretly a particle physicist and very much enjoys talking about physics with non-specialists… like us!

Mike first met James when he was in Melbourne, Australia to present at Pause Fest.  Then in a lucky turn of events, Mike’s travel plans brought him to Geneva and he was able to visit James at CERN.

Mike said that “visiting James at CERN was like a childhood dream come true.  I’d heard of this vast mega lab growing up and imagined the lair of some Jame Bond villain.  And you know what, it totally exceeded these expectations – except for good, not evil.  What a tribute to the ambition of humankind CERN is.  To receive a behind-the-scenes tour with James was unbelievable and unforgettable.  A memory I will cherish forever.  The type of moonshot thinking that James and his colleagues at CERN bring to the world is more important now than ever.”

Needless to say, it was a great experience to get this extra time with James and to experience a guided tour of CERN.  Thanks James!

If you’re not familiar with The European Organization for Nuclear Research or CERN as it’s commonly known, and the LHC.  The LHC is a 27 kilometre supercooled, vacuum-sealed, ringed megastructure that runs underground, crossing the borders of Switzerland and France.  How cool is that! Well, according to James that stills way too small to test his really big ideas!

Deep in his underground lair, James is looking for new phenomena and explanations for some of the key unsolved mysteries of the universe.

He’s also a brilliant public speaker who, like Arthur C Clarke, challenges his audience to take a step past the limits of the possible, by going beyond them into the impossible.

“It is entirely possible that in the future someone will be able to come up with a way to harness time, to understand time and be able to do time travel.” Dr James Beacham

Do you want to jump in for some highlights- here are some of the questions Mike asked?

01:41 – Firstly, the big question. What is time?
3:43 – If time’s a parameter and a coordinate, how well do we understand it compared to other parameters and coordinates?
5:20 – Does that mean that a star that we think is over there, may not actually be there, because the photons have been affected by this force that you’re talking about?
05:46 – How do you visualise this? How do we get our minds around this concept?
06:18 – Does that mean we might not have the right metaphor yet? We don’t have a proper understanding?
10:09 – So what you’re getting into there is really about space-time, you know? And this is, I think, a concept that came from Einstein, is that right?
10:33 – So, how big a legacy has Einstein left for you, as a particle physicist?
11:22 – Did Einstein have a time machine? Did he come from the future?
11:40 – Do you think we’re going be able to have the ability to travel through time at any point?
12:45 – When you’re talking about travelling in time, is that forward only? Travelling backwards in time seems like a completely different kettle of fish? 14:30 – When it comes to science fiction, what inspires you when you think about time?
16:23 – Let’s project into the future of time. Where do we land in terms of time, in the way that you see things?
